It's hard to believe that Lummi was a side project at the start of 2024. It wasn't until around the beginning of summer that we looked around and thought, "Yo. We're on to something here. Let's run with this.”

It's safe to say we're so happy we went with our guts on this one. After just half a year, Lummi is growing into a tool that is genuinely helping creatives make better and more memorable designs.

How we’re making creativity more fun (and less work)

In 2024, we doubled down on building and reimagining features that make creating faster and easier. Everything we’ve rolled out is designed to keep your creative process smooth. Here’s a look at the tools you loved most:

1. Easily adjust aspect ratios

Reframe quickly became a favorite. Automagically getting the right aspect ratio for visuals was a huge step up from awkwardly stretching or cropping images to fit a design—whether it’s a vertical Instagram story or a wide hero header. Plus, it helps you nail the perfect focal point, making space for CTAs or text easily.

2. Convert images to transparent PNGs

Background removal made it easy to cut out the background from any image in seconds. Whether you needed a transparent PNG for a design or just wanted to focus on the main subject, this tool saved you from hours of manual editing in Photoshop.

3. Make images your own

Retouch became a standout tool this year, giving you the power to edit images with ease. Want to add a hat or even change an entire outfit? Done. Need to replace a cluttered background with a clean, studio look? Easy. Retouch lets you reimagine any part of an image, so you can customize visuals and make them your own right inside Lummi

4. Download print-resolution images

‍Ultra resolution helped you upscale images by 8x, giving you print-ready resolution for your designs.

5. Bonus updates

The Lummi API also debuted this year! Now developers can integrate Lummi straight into their tools. Oh, and it’s free—so if you’re ready to integrate Lummi into your platform, hit us up!

Last, did we mentioned the Explore page? We created it to make it faster and easier to discover curated visuals and fresh trends for your designs.

Growing beyond (un-boring) stock photos

What started as a few hundred generated images is now a library of over 50,000 curated images.

But a few months ago, we thought, "Why stop at stock photos? Creatives need doodles and cool 3D stuff, too!"

It just made sense, so we added thousands of gorgeous royalty-free illustrations and 3D assets.

We went on a world tour!

From hosting the Awwwards show in NYC to speaking at Smashing Conference in Antwerp, we traveled the world to share insights on generating inclusive AI images and designing better UX for AI products. Along the way, we met amazing creatives and designers to spread the word of what Lummi is all about.

While we loved everything 2024 brought, our mission to end boring stock images is just getting started. We’re planning even more, like new integrations (Wix, perhaps?) and smarter features for creatives, plus fresh visual trends to keep Lummi your ultimate creative go-to.
